UN Approves Mongolia-Initiated Resolution on the Situation of Women and Girls in Rural Areas

Ulaanbaatar, November 15, 2023 /MONTSAME/. The Third Committee (Social, Humanitarian, and Cultural) of the 78th Session of the UN General Assembly approved 12 draft resolutions, including "Improvement of the situation of women and girls in rural areas," proposed by Mongolia, on November 10, 2023.
Today, almost one in four women live in rural areas. Empowering women and girls in rural areas and ensuring gender equality is the key to achieving all Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
As the world confronts challenges, such as pandemic recovery and climate change, economic and food crises, and technological transition, the need for empowering women and girls in rural areas has become more exigent. The resolution "Improvement of the situation of women and girls in rural areas" with its additional references, paves the way for ensuring the full, equal, and meaningful participation of all women and girls in rural, remote, and island communities, fostering their active involvement in social life and decision-making processes during this critical period.
A total of 98 UN member states joined the “Improvement of the situation of women and girls in rural areas” resolution as co-authors.
