Twenty Three Mongolian Sumo Wrestlers to Compete in Natsu Basho

Ulaanbaatar, May 1, 2024 /MONTSAME/. The Japan Sumo Association (JSA) has announced the schedule for the Summer Grand Sumo Tournament, which will begin in Tokyo on May 12, 2024. Yokozuna Terunofuji has been leading the banzuke for 15 consecutive tournaments.
However, Ozeki Kotonowaka has taken the title of his grandfather, Kotokazura, for this tournament. As a result, the renowned name Kotokazura is once again listed in the banzuke. Additionally, last tournament’s star, Takeryufuji, has moved up from 17th to 11th place in the maegashira ranking. Meanwhile, Mongolian sumo wrestler Ōshōma Degi from the Naruto stable has advanced to the upper division. He has become the 29th Mongolian and 54th foreign wrestler to reach the top division. Also, Mitoryu will compete in the Makushita division after a year.
From the Onomatsu stable, Onokatsu B. Choijilsuren has been promoted to juryo and has become a sekitori. He is the 39th Mongolian and 74th foreign sekitori. In this tournament, 23 Mongolian wrestlers led by Yokozuna Terunofuji will compete across five divisions. O. Demidjamts, known as Seihakukho, has been ranked third in the Jonokuchi division on the west side, starting his professional sumo career. There will be seven wrestlers in the Makushita division, four in Juryo, seven in Makushita, four in Sandanme, and one in Jnokuchi.
