UNFPA and Rio Tinto Mongolia to establish four PCR labs in Mongolia

Ulaanbaatar/MONTSAME/. Four PCR labs will be established in Mongolia as part of The Building the Capacity for COVID-19 Diagnosis and Service Delivery for the Most Vulnerable in Mongolia amidst Pandemic project, funded by Rio Tinto Mongolia with
MNT1.7 billion and it will be implemented in partnership with Oyu Tolgoi and United Nations Population Fund. Last Saturday, January 16, the first batch of the equipment of four new PCR laboratories arrived in Mongolia. The first batch includes the crucial
equipment of PCR labs such as the PCR machines, nuclear acid purification system, PCR reagent kits and virus transport medium with swabs. The labs will be opened at the National Center for Maternal and Child Health, Ulaanbaatar City Maternal and
Children’s Hospital, General Hospital of Zamyn-Uud soum of Dornogobi aimag and the Regional Diagnostic and Treatment
Center of Umnugobi Aimag. The establishment of labs is expected to increase the capacity of the COVID-19 diagnostic laboratory in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia’s most densely populated city, and in the border region which has significance of the economy and foreign
trade.
