MONGOLIAN NATIONAL ELECTED AS MEMBER OF COMMITTEE ON THE RIGHTS OF PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/. President of the Mongolian National Federation of the Blind D.Gerel was elected as a member of the UN Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities during the 13th session of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
Mongolia nominated its candidate for the first time in the election where candidates from 27 countries ran for 9 seats. As a result, D.Gerel was elected as a member of the committee with the support of 93 UN member states.
The UN Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities is responsible for overseeing the implementation of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and has 18 members, elected for four-year term. The members of the Committee shall act in accordance with the principles of independence, non-discrimination, high morality and specialization in human rights issues.
